According to the Oxford dictionary, sleep is a condition of body and mind in which the nervous system is relatively inactive, the eyes closed, the postural muscles relaxed and consciousness is practically suspended. Sleep typically recurs for several hours every night. It is made up of two states, rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM (NREM) sleep that alternate in a repetitive cycle across a sleep episode (Carskadon Dement 2011). Memory is defined as a behavioral change caused by an experience. Declarative memory is available to our consciousness, and concerns events and facts. Procedural memory, on the other hand, is not available to our consciousness, and is the memory that is needed to use a previously learned skill (Okano, Hirano Balaban, 2000, p.12403). In the second edition of Learning and Memory, short-term memory, also known as working memory, is defined as a hypothetical system in the brain that stores a limited amount of information for a relatively brief period of time (Purdy et al. 2001). The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), started in January of 1994, created a situation in North America in which there are no taxes on most products imported and exported between the three countries. Ideally, the governments of Canada, the U.S. and Mexico believed that breaking the trading barriers would increase jobs and other things as it improved each of their economies.
